Nahibalo ba mo that the oldest military fort in the country is found in Cebu City?
Yes, the Fort San Pedro (construction began in 1565), is the oldest Spanish military colonial structure in the country, and predates Fort Santiago in Intrmuros, Manila.
Interesting trivia: when the Philippine Revolution ended Spanish Rule on May 1, 1898, the fort was surrendered not to Americans but to Cebuano Revolutionaries.
Today, it is a historical park with a museum that is part and parcel of our heritage as mga Dakbayanong Sugbuanon.
Hundreds of local and foreign tourists visit Fort San Pedro daily and it also is a favorite venue for milestone celebrations of the Cebu City Government.
As we continue with our celebration of the Cebu City Heritage Month, we also commemorate the 459th year of the mighty Fort San Pedro’s founding.
Mabuhi!
